MARQUETTE, Mich. - Four different Wildcats found the back of the net, and Atte Tolvanen turned aside 20 shots, to lift the Northern Michigan hockey team to a 4-1 victory over No. 16 Michigan Tech Friday night at the Berry Events Center in front of a sellout crowd of 4,260.
Michigan Tech jumped out to an early lead, striking right off of a faceoff at 2:28 in the first frame. After Michael Neville won the draw back to Alex Petan, Petan fired a shot on net. Neville was there to flip the rebound past Tolvanen.
Tolvanen came up with a key save to keep the Wildcats within one at just over the seven-minute mark. Neville was sprung on a shorthanded break, but Tolvanen was able to bat his shot away.
At 11:12, Northern Michigan evened the score when Troy Loggins threw a shot on net from along the boards, and Casey Purpur slipped behind the defense and banged home the rebound.
The Wildcats took their first lead of the game in the second period when John Siemer struck on a power play at 9:10. Siemer skated around the top of the circle and then roofed a shoot past Jamie Phillips.
Just over a minute later, Loggins forced a turnover behind the net and sent the puck to Denver Pierce in front for the tap in and a 3-1 edge.
At 2:32 of the third, during a five-minute man advantage, Darren Nowick sent a pass to Siemer at the bottom of the circle. Siemer sent it right back to Nowick, who found the back of the net from the middle of the circle to cap the scoring.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 2-1-2 (1-0-0 WCHA). They return to action tomorrow night when they face Michigan Tech at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
