ANCHORAGE - Alabama Huntsville survived a third-period charge from Alaska Anchorage, as the Chargers dispatched the Seawolves, 3-2 in overtime to pick up the Western Collegiate Hockey Association sweep Saturday at the Sullivan Arena.
The Chargers (4-7-1, 4-3-1 WCHA) furnished a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of play, before the Seawolves (1-7-0, 0-4-0 WCHA) used two of their own in the third frame to force extra minutes. UAH handed UAA its fourth straight loss with the game-winning strike, 3:54 into overtime.
Scoring for the Seawolves was senior captain Matt Anholt and sophomore Nils Rygaard, shorthanded. Anholt picked up his second point in as many games with an even-strength tally at 5:52. Junior Jarrett Brown fired from the blueline and netminder Jordan Uhelski made the initial save before Anholt collected the rebound.
Rygaard's shorthanded tally came off a Charger turnover in their zone. Uhelski tried to clear the puck off the boards and a bad bounce landed in sophomore Alex Jackstadt hands, who found Rygaard's streaking at 14:07. Rygaard beat Uhelski blocker side with a wrister.
Meanwhile, the game-winning goal was scored by UAH's Matt Salhany, giving the Chargers six points on the weekend and moving them into third in the WCHA standings with 13 points. The Seawolves remain last in the league.
Picking up the Chargers first two strikes were Han Gorowsky on the power play at 8:26 of the second and Kurt Gosselin at 19:12.
The Seawolves were out shot 34-16 overall, including 3-0 in overtime. Junior goaltender Olivier Mantha made 31 saves in the loss, while Uhelski stopped 14.
UAA will head to the road next weekend for a non-conference slate at Penn State, Nov. 11-12.
