Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State men's hockey defeated Alaska 3-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association first round play-off action in Mankato Friday. The Mavericks started the action quickly against the Nanooks, scoring within the opening three minutes.
Senior defensemen Sean Flanagan fired a shot from the blue line finding net, just over the shoulder of the Alaska goaltender Davis Jones, to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead at the 2:05 mark. Flanagan's goal was his fifth of the season. Minnesota State capitalized on a power play chance at 12:47 when freshman winger Parker Tuomie scored his seventh goal of the season after his initial shot was blocked, but gathered in the rebound for the set-up.
The Mavericks continued their offensive pressure into the second, outshooting the Nanooks by a 14-9 margin mid-way through the period. Sophomore netminder Jason Pawloski and the Mavericks successfully defended a 5-on-3 Alaska power play with six minutes left in the second period to keep the visitors scoreless. Tuomie upped the lead to 3-0 and scored his second goal of the game at 15:15 after splitting two defenders and unleashing a wrister from the slot.
Minnesota State and Alaska played a scoreless third period. The Mavericks and the Nanooks traded power plays throughout the period and played 4-on-4 hockey early in the third. Minnesota State was able to defend its lead in the final 20:00 of play to preserve Pawloski's shutout and defeat Alaska 3-0 for its first play-off win of the season.
Minnesota State, which was 1-for-3 on the power play, put 33 shots on goal in the contest. The Nanooks were 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
Pawloski was credited with 23 saves in the game in bringing his record to 6-3-2 on the year.
The Mavericks are 20-11-4 overall on the season.
The two teams square-off again at Verizon Wireless Center on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
