MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan hockey team was downed by Alabama-Huntsville, 3-1, Saturday night at the Berry Events Center.
The first period was marked by end-to-end action, few whistles and momentum swings. By the end of the frame, the Wildcats held a 7-6 advantage in shots. Their best chance came at just past the halfway mark when Dominik Shine came up with a bouncing puck in traffic, skated behind the net and fed Troy Loggins in the slot. Jordan Uhelski managed to make the pad save on Loggins's blistering shot to keep the game scoreless.
Special teams play was the story of the second period. The teams combined to take 23 minutes worth of penalties on six infractions.
At 4:44, the Chargers drew ahead, 1-0, after Regan Soquila finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play by beating Atte Tolvanen five hole during the team's five-minute man advantage. They extended their edge to two strikes while the teams were skating 4-on-4; Tyler Poulsen's dump in deflected off a Wildcat to Josh Kestner, who corralled the puck and beat Tolvanen blocker side.
Loggins pulled the Wildcats within one strike at 14:41. After Jesse Junttila blocked a shot, the puck bounced out to Loggins to start a 2-on-1 rush the other way. Loggins opted to hold onto the puck and pulled up just outside the slot after Cody Champagne dove to try to shut down the passing line. He then sent a blistering shot past Uhelski blocker side.
The third period was more like the first. Early in the frame, Jordan Klimek made a diving play to knock the puck away from a Charger on a breakaway to keep the Wildcats within one. At just past the halfway mark, Denver Pierce carried the puck into the offensive zone and, while surrounded by three Chargers, forced Uhelski to make a big save to keep his team ahead on the scoreboard.
Alabama-Huntsville tacked on its insurance goal at 15:53 while on a 4-on-3 man advantage.
The Wildcats return to action on Dec. 28 when they take on Cornell in their first game of the Florida College Hockey Classic in Estero, Fla.
