BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) - The Bemidji State University men's hockey team got goals from Brendan Harms, Nate Arentz and Jay Dickman, while Myles Fitzgerald contributed a pair of assists to lead the Beavers to a 3-2 victory over Lake Superior State University Saturday. The victory allowed BSU to take five of six points out of the weekend and retain its grip on first place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Associaiton standings.

The Beavers found themselves in a hole early as Gage Torrel scored just 23 seconds after the drop of the puck. But the goal would ignite the Beaver offense. Brendan Harms netted a power-play goal at the 10:59 mark with help from Zach Whitecloud and Gerry Fitzgerald to get the Beavers on the board and end a four-game streak without a power-play goal. Nate Arentz posted his fourth goal of the season to give the Beavers their first lead just 40 seconds later.

Midway through the second period and already up 2-1, Jay Dickman would score a wrap around, power-play goal from Myles Fitzgerald and Kyle Bauman. The goal would stand as the eventual game winner as Mitch Hults would net his sixth goal of the season at the 15:37 mark to bring the Lakers to within one, 3-2, but that was as close as the visitors would get.

The Beavers controlled play for the majority of the night finishing with a 32-15 edge in shots on goal.

BSU was also 2-for-5 on the power play in a game riddled with whistles. A total of 14 penalties were called with Lake Superior State serving 16 minutes for eight penalties.

The BSU penalty-killing unit was flawless, snuffing out all four Laker man advantage opportunities. Following the 4-for-4 night, BSU has not allowed a power-play goal in league play in seven games and 23 opponent opportunities.

The Beavers, now 13-5-1 overall and 13-1-1-1 in league play, walk away from the WCHA to wrap up the 2016 calendar year. Dec. 16-17 Bemidji State will battle top ranked Minnesota Duluth in a home-and-home series. The teams will drop the puck at 7:07 p.m. Friday at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn. before wrapping up the series at 7:07 p.m. at Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn.
