Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State put 48 shots on goal in overwhelming Northern Michigan by a 7-4 margin in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action in Mankato Saturday.
A fast-paced 20 minutes to start the game saw five goals scored with the Mavericks owning a 3-2 edge when it was all said and done. Sophomore defenseman Daniel Brickley wired a shot from the point past Atte Tolvanen for a power play marker at 9:15 to get things rolling. Troy Loggins responded with a power play goal for Northern Michigan at 11:31 before Maverick freshman forward Charlie Gerard notched his second goal of the season at 14:50. Northern Michigan tied it up again shortly thereafter on a shot from Luke Voltin that beat Minnesota State junior netminder Aaron Nelson high over the left shoulder. Zeb Knutson jumped on a turnover in the offensive zone and found Zach Stepan on the weak side and the senior forward made no mistake on the one-timer for his fifth goal of the year to close out the scoring in the opening stanza.
Both teams scored twice in the second period (Zeb Knutson and Nick Rivera scored for the Mavericks) and Minnesota State emerged with a 5-4 lead after 40 minutes of action.
The Mavericks closed out the scoring in the game with C.J. Franklin and Marc Michaelis putting a capper on the victory.
Brickley finished with a three-point night on a goal and two assists. Franklin, Knutson, Rivera, Gerard and Rivera all had a goal and an assist in the win. Parker Tuomie and Ian Scheid finished with two assists each.
Minnesota State, which was two-for-seven on the power play, put 48 shots on goal in the contest. The Wildcats were three-for-five with the man advantage.
Maverick netminders Aaron Nelson and Cole Huggins combined for had 14 stops in the game.
The Mavericks are 1-10-4 overall (14-8-4 WCHA) on the season.
Tonight's game was the final regular-season home game for Minnesota State. The Mavericks close out the 2016-17 regular season with a road series next Friday and Saturday at Bemidji State.
