FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team concludes their two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series against the No. 9th-ranked Bowling Green Falcons with a split, as the Nooks fell 2-0 at the Carlson Center on Saturday night. The loss drops Alaska's overall record to 6-16-2 and 6-11-2-1 in conference play, while the Falcons improve to 16-6-3 on the season and 11-5-2-2 in league matchups.
With Alaska taking game one of the series 4-1 on Friday and Bowling Green taking a 2-0 victory on Saturday, each team walks away from the weekend with three WCHA points. The Nanooks now sit tied for seventh place with the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers, each with 20 points, while Bowling Green moves up to second place in the rankings with 37 points.
Bowling Green scored early on Saturday, as Max Johnson tallied a backdoor goal only 2:56 into the first period. Johnson's goal was assisted by Brandon Kruse and Connor McDonald.
After a scoreless second period, Bowling Green was able to seal the victory with an empty-net goal courtesy of Kruse. Teammate Stephen Baylis was credited with the lone assist.
In net, Alaska junior goaltender Anton Martinsson registered 32 saves on the night, including 13 in the first period and 11 in the second. On the other end of the ice, BGSU's Eric Dop tallied 31 saves against the Nanooks, including 16 in the third period alone.
Alaska was outshot by their opponent for the second-straight night, 34-31 but held the Falcons scoreless on the man-advantage throughout the entire weekend, as Alaska's penalty kill went 4-for-4 on Saturday.
The Alaska Nanooks hockey team will hit the road for a two-game WCHA series against the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers next Friday, Jan. 25 and Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Puck-drop both nights is scheduled for 4:07pm AKST.
