Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell in a tightly contested 4-2 contest to the nationally #20 ranked Lake Superior State Lakers on Saturday, (Feb. 2) night in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play.
Ferris State freshman forward Ethan Stewart picked up his first collegiate point in the game in a strong effort for the Bulldogs.
After a scoreless first period, the Bulldogs jumped ahead 1-0 when freshman forward Jake Transit finished a chance after Stewart's shot rebounded off of LSSU goaltender Mareks Mitens for his fourth goal of the season. Stewart (1) and sophomore forward Liam MacDougall (3) earned assists on the goal.
The Lakers scored two-straight goals, first at 6:01 of the second when Chase Gamelin tallied his first collegiate goal, followed by Max Humitz a 7:52 of the middle frame for a 2-1 Laker lead.
Ferris State answered when senior forward Jacob Hetz scored his third goal of the year at 16:18 of the second period. Freshmen forward Hunter Wendt (5) and defenseman Cooper Zech (19) assisted on Hetz's goal for the 2-2 score.
Lake Superior State then scored two unanswered goals with the game-winner coming at 19:07 of the second when Collin Saccoman gave LSSU a 3-2 lead, followed by Anthony Nellis on a five-on-three power play at 6:58 of the third period for the 4-2 final.
Ferris State freshman goaltender Roni Salmenkangas made 30 stops in the game while Mitens picked up the win on 26 saves for the Lakers.
The Bulldogs return to action to take on the Bemidji State Beavers as their four-game homestand continues on Friday (Feb. 8) evening at the Ewigleben Ice Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. (ET) in Big Rapids with the finale on Saturday (Feb. 9) night.
