BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 4-1 to the Bemidji State Beavers in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play on Saturday (Nov. 16) at Ewigleben Ice Arena.
Ferris State freshman defenseman Jake Willets scored his first collegiate goal for the Bulldogs midway through the third period.
The Beavers got on the board at 43 seconds of the first when Aaron Miller snuck a shot past FSU senior goaltender Austin Shaw for a 1-0 BSU lead.
Bemidji State tacked on their second at 2:09 of the third when Owen Sillinger tapped in from in front of the Bulldog goal.
At 10:44 of the third, Willets made a dash down the left wing and punched it through the legs of BSU goaltender Zach Driscoll to cut the Beaver lead to 2-1. Junior forward Liam MacDougall (4) and freshman defenseman Blake Evennou (3) picked up assists on Willets' first collegiate goal.
The Beavers tacked on insurance markers at 17:01 when Aaron Miller scored off a bounce, followed by Owen Sillinger on an empty net goal at 19:45 of the third period for the 4-1 final.
Ferris State finished with a 23-22 lead in shots over the Beavers. Ferris State went 0-4 on the power play and held Bemidji State 0-3. In goal, Shaw took the loss for Ferris State, making 18 stops. Driscoll picked up the win for the Beavers on 22 saves.
The Bulldogs head for a 12-day excursion to Alaska where they'll play both Alaska schools back-to-back, leading off with the University of Alaska Nanooks in Fairbanks at the Carlson Center. Puck drop is set for 11:07 pm ET on Friday (Nov. 22) in Fairbanks.
