GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Ralph Engelstad Arena) - Aaron Miller scored his first goal of the season late in the third period Saturday, but it was too little too late as the University of North Dakota handed the Bemidji State University men's hockey team a 4-1 loss to complete a sweep of the non-conference series.
The Fighting Hawks dominated play from the drop of the puck setting the tone early by building a 1-0 lead after just 36 seconds of play. They added a second goal at the 16:51 mark to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Aided by a pair of power-play opportunities, UND earned a 17-5 edge in faceoff wins and piled up 14 shots while holding BSU to just three in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Bemidji State goaltender Henry Johnson single-handedly kept the Beavers in the game during the first period. He not only turned aside 12 of the 14 shots he faced, he also backstopped a BSU penalty-kill unit that stood tall on two occasions and withstood a flurry of shots to end the period.
UND continued to apply significant pressure in the second period, out shooting BSU 11-5 in the frame while adding a third goal.
The Beavers trimmed the deficit to two goals at the 18:43 mark of the third when Miller netted a goal with help from Tyler Kirkup and Ethan Somoza. Just 18 seconds later, the Fighting Hawks took their three-goal lead back on an empty-net goal off the stick of Colton Poolman.
UND completed the game with a 29-20 advantage in shots on goal, while special teams play was a non-factor in the outcome. Both teams were 0-for-3 on the man advantage.
Johnson finished the game with 25 saves and allowed three goals in the loss. His record dips to 0-1-1 on the season.
Bemidji State, now 0-2-2 on the season will travel to Fairbanks, Alaska in search of its first victory as it faces the University of Alaska in the Beavers' 2019-20 Western Collegiate Hockey Association opener. The two-game series will get underway at 10:07 (CT) Friday from the Olympic ice of the Carlson Center. Saturday's series finale is set for a 10:07 p.m. (CT) opening faceoff.
