Big Rapids, Mich. The Ferris State University men's ice hockey wrapped the 2019-20 season with a 4-2 loss to the Lake Superior State Lakers in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play on Saturday (Feb. 29) at Ewigleben Ice Arena.
Ferris State freshman defenseman Blake Evennou picked up a pair of assists while sophomore forward Jake Transit scored a highlight reel goal on the night for the Bulldogs.
The Lakers took an early 1-0 lead at 11:36 of the first period on the power play when Dustin Manz scored.
At 12:14 of the first period, Ferris State freshman forward Cade Kowalski got loose down the right lane and fire a shot to the front of the goal that hit a Laker leg and bounced in for his first collegiate goal. Sophomore forward Justin Michaelian picked up his third assist of the year while Evennou earned his 13th.
Lake Superior State got back-to-back goals, first at 15:26 of the first period when William Riedell scored, followed by Louis Boudon at 11:49 of the second on the power play for a 3-1 Laker lead.
At 12:55 of the second frame, Transit picked the puck up behind the Bulldog net, streaked down the right wing wall, snuck past a defender, and fired a shot through the legs of Laker defenseman Alec Semandel that went top left corner on a toe-drag to cut the LSSU lead to 3-2 for his sixth goal of the year. Senior forward Cam Clarke (6) and Evennou (14) earned assists on the play.
The Lakers finished the scoring at 1:38 when Pierre-Luc Veillete fired a shot top right corner for the 4-2 final.
In goal, Ferris State senior goaltender Austin Shaw made 20 stops, while the Bulldogs peppered Laker goaltender Roman Bengert, who made 34 stops for his first win of the season.
Ferris State had a 36-24 lead in shots, but went 0-4 on the power play, but the Lakers went 2-4 with the man advantage.
The Bulldogs honored their seven seniors prior to the contest on senior night, including forwards Jason Tackett, Dominic Lutz, Clarke, defeneseman Nate Kallen, Joe Rutkowski, Zach Yoder and goaltender Shaw.
