GRAND FORKS, N.D. --- No. 4/6 Boston University scored three shorthanded goals and two empty-net goals which was the difference as the Sioux drop a 6-2 decision Sunday afternoon at the Ralph Engelsted Arena.
The Sioux, for the second straight night, jumped out to an early lead as Kelsey Ketcher (Mound, Minn.) made an outstanding individual effort to beat a defender wide, crashing the net and find a hole past Terriers backstop Kerrin Sperry.
Ketcher would finish the game with one goal and one assist, her first multipoint game of her career and was named the games third star.
Sperry would settle in though and made some outstanding saves throughout the game in her collegiate debut, finishing the game allowing two goals off 23 shots.
After the first goal the Sioux seemed to look a little flat and the Terriers took advantage. The Sioux outshot the Terriers 17-7 in the first period yesterday, it took until the third period for the Sioux to reach 17 shots today although still edging BU in the game 23-21.
Jenn Wakefield had an outstanding weekend to open her season for the Terriers after spending last season as an alternate for the Canadian Olympic team. Wakefield made plays all weekend and finished with three goals, two assists and a +4 while being named today's first star. She was also a Patty Kazmaier award finalist her freshman season with New Hampshire.
Wakefield would open today's games scoring for the Terriers evening the game at one goal apiece at 6:11 of the first stanza. It was the first of four straight goals for BU.
Jenlle Kohanchuk would give the Terriers the lead they wouldn't relinquish at 8:18 and BU would score three shorthanded goals from then out.
Wakefield scored the first at 9:36 of the first period, Marie-Philip Poulin would add the next for the lone goal of the second frame at 11:28 and add another shorthanded, empty-net goal from her own zone at 18:02.
If the game wasn't sealed already, Kirchner would score her second of the weekend with another empty-net goal with 15 seconds remaining on the clock.
After an opening night where they combined for five points, BU head coach Brian Durocher had to have focused on a way to shutdown Jocelyne Lamoureux and Monique Lamoureux-Kolls. For the most part they did.
Lamoureux would find a way to cut the lead to 4-2 at 14:59 of the third period with assists from Ketcher and Lamoureux-Kolls, before the two empty-net goals to close it out.
The Sioux open WCHA play for the second consecutive season against the defending national champion hosting Minnesota Duluth in a Friday/Sunday series at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
