St. Cloud, Minn. -- The #3/4-ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (11-4-1, 9-4-1-0 WCHA) shutout the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (0-14-1, 0-11-1-1 WCHA) by a score of 5-0 on Saturday, Dec. 4, in the National Hockey Center.
Haley Irwin garnered the contest's First Star honors after charting five points, which included a natural hat trick and two assists. Jocelyne Larocque added a goal and two helpers for the defending national champions while rookie Brienna Gillanders chipped in with the remaining UMD goal. Gillander also tallied an assist on the evening.
The Bulldogs dominated on the ice, out-shooting the Huskies 52-20. Senior netminder Ashley Nixon (Blaine) defended the Husky net and backstopped the Huskies with 47 saves in 60:00 minutes of action.
UMD's Kim Martin, an Olympian goaltender, earned the victory between the pipes, stopping all 20 SCSU shots.
Minnesota Duluth also connected on three-of-nine power play opportunities after being held scoreless by SCSU last night on the skater advantage. Of note, tonight's WCHA stint witnessed 24 combined penalties.
The Huskies were led by sophomore Jocelyn Zabrick (Airdrie, Alberta) and rookie Julia Gilbert (Hermantown), both of whom had three shots on net.
St. Cloud State will continue home action as the Huskies play host to the nationally ranked Wisconsin Badgers next weekend, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10-11, in the National Hockey Center. Both games are slated for 2:07 pm.
