Mankato, Minn. --- The Minnesota State University women's hockey team made its 2010-11 debut Friday night with a 3-2 victory over the Niagara University Purple Eagles.
Eight newcomers made their first appearance in a Maverick uniform tonight as the Mavericks.
The Purple Eagles took advantage of an MSU penalty midway through the first period as freshman winger Kaleigh Chippy beat MSU netminder Alli Altmann stick side. Jocey Kleiber and Carleah Angeles both assisted on the power play goal.
Maverick center Moira O'Connor scored the first of her two tallies on the night with the equalizer, beating NU goalie Jenni Bauer with an extra skater. The power play goal came at 10:31 in the second period. Line-mates Emmi Leinonen and Kathleen Rogan both assisted on the score.
Niagara recaptured the lead late in the second frame when NU's Kristen Richards threw the puck towards Altmann and the puck found the back of the net. The go-ahead-goal was set up by an assist from Leah Whittaker.
Midway through the third, Lauren Smith answered, tallying a short-handed goal for the Mavericks, tying the game at two. The momentum continued to sway towards MSU as O'Connor recorded her second score of the night to take a 3-2 lead. O'Connor's game winning goal came off a nice set up pass from Rogan. Nina Tikkinen also recorded an assist on the play.
The Mavericks outshot the Purple Eagles, 33-15. MSU goaltender Alli Altmann finished with 13 saves while NU's Jenni Bauer recorded 30 saves. The two squads will face-off tomorrow afternoon with the puck dropping at 3:07 at All Seasons Arena.
