Alex Nelson had a goal for the Huskies

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - St. Cloud State's sophomore forwards Kylie Lane (Roseau) and Alex Nelson (Andover) each netted a goal in a 2-4 exhibition loss to the Minnesota Whitecaps on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 9, in the National Hockey Center.

The Huskies welcomed three former players back to the NHC this afternoon. Those players included Sammy Nixon (2005-09), Megan McCarthy (2005-09) and Meaghan Pezon (2006-10).

The Whitecaps jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from Gigi Marvin and Allie Thunstrom before the Huskies cracked the scoreboard in the initial period.

St. Cloud State was pressuring the Whitecaps net and in the midst of a flurry, Lane was able to slam the puck past MNWC's starting goalie, Sanya Sandahl, on the rebound to cut the Whitecaps lead in half. Lane, who scored at the 12:49 mark, was assisted by sophomores Callie Dahl (Stillwater) and Lisa Martinson (St. Louis Park).

The Whitecaps were quick to respond and just 39 seconds later upped their lead to 3-1 with a goal from Iya Gavrilova. In 20 minutes of action, SCSU's starting netminder, Tayler VanDenakker (Winnipeg, Manitoba) stopped eight of MNWCs 11 shots.

Husky goalie Anna Donlan (Hillsboro, Wis.) had a strong showing in the second frame for the Huskies as she stopped all eight Whitecaps shots in 20 minutes of ice time.

St. Cloud State's head coach Jeff Giesen put senior goaltender Ashley Nixon (Blaine) between the pipes in the third frame. Of note, this was the first time in the Nixon family history that Sammy and Ashley played against each other. Originally from Blaine, the two sisters both game to SCSU for their collegiate careers. Now graduated, the older sister Sammy had a chance to shoot on her younger sister Ashley this afternoon in the NHC.

Saara Tuominen was able to beat Nixon stick side at the 6:34 mark of the third period to post the Whitecaps fourth goal of the day. The Huskies continued to skate hard and caught a good break late in the period.

On the Husky power play, Alex Nelson gathered up the puck in neutral ice and stormed into the Whitecap zone on a 2-on-2. Nelson wound up from the top of the left face-off cirle and sent a blistering slap shot towards the Whitecaps relief goalie, Kim Hanlon. The puck took an awkward bounce off Hanlon's chest and trickled underneath Hanlon's left shoulder for the score.

Nelson was assisted by rookie Molli Mott (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and sophomore Katie Allen (Red Deer, Alberta) at the 15:04 mark of the final frame.

SCSU's Nixon backstopped the Huskies with four saves in 20 minutes of action. The gritty Huskies out-shot the Minnesota Whitecaps 31-24 in the loss.

St. Cloud State (0-3-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) will now board a plane and head to Columbus, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 15-16, to open Western Collegiate Hockey Association action against the Ohio State University Buckeyes.
