Erie, Pa. -- St. Cloud State University women's hockey (0-1-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) dropped its season opener to No. 3-ranked Mercyhurst College (1-0-0, 0-0-0 CHA) by a score of 9-1 on Friday, Oct. 1, in the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Sophomore forward Callie Dahl (Stillwater) scored the first goal of the 2010-11 season for the Huskies. She was assisted by sophomore Jocelyn Zabrick (Airdrie, Alberta) and rookie Sydney Burghardt (Medicine Hat, Alberta).
Dahl scored at the 14:50 mark of the first frame.
The Lakers out-shot the Huskies 42-23 in the contest and went 2-of-5 on the power play. Mercyhurst's defense also held the Huskies scoreless on the skater advantage (0-of-4).
Senior goalie Ashley Nixon (Blaine) started the game for the Huskies, backstopping St. Cloud State with 18 saves in 28:41 minutes of ice time. Nixon surrendered seven goals to the Lakers before junior netminder Tayler VanDenakker (Winnipeg, Manitoba) came in for relief. VanDenakker totaled 15 saves and gave up two tallies in 31:19.
St. Cloud State will completed the weekend tilt against #3 Mercyhurst College tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Oct. 2, at 2:00 pm EST.
