BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center)- Jen Schoullis' hat trick led No. 2 University of Minnesota past Bemidji State University 4-1 Friday night at Sanford Center. The Beavers hung with the Golden Gophers for two periods but Minnesota was able to put BSU away with two third period goals. The Beavers fall to 5-2-2 (2-2-1 WCHA). Minnesota improves to 8-1-0 (6-1-0 WCHA).
Zuzana Tomcikova (Sr., G, Bratislava, Slovakia) had 46 saves on the night as she fell just three saves short of her career high of 49. Tomcikova faced 25 shots in the first period alone notching 23 saves and giving up the first two Minnesota goals.
Bemidji State got on the scoreboard first at the 7:22 mark when Sadie Lundquist (Jr., Cloquet, Minn.) scored her fifth goal of the season off assists from Emily Erickson (R-Jr., Coleraine, Minn.) and Tess Dusik (So., Oak Bluff, Manitoba). The assist was the eighth of the year for Erickson and the third of the season for Dusik.
Lundquist has tallied three goals and six assists in the last three games for BSU. The center of the top line had two goals and six assists in two victories for BSU over St. Cloud State University last weekend at Sanford Center. Dusik's assist marks the seventh point the sophomore has tallied in the last six games. Dusik was moved up to the top line for the first game of the University of Maine series and has remained on the top unit along with Erickson and Lundquist for the last five games.
Minnesota answered the Beavers at the 15:26 mark on Schoullis' first goal of the game. Megan Bozek and Amanda Kessel teamed up for the assist. The same trio struck again just over two minutes later on Schoullis' second goal of the first period to put the Golden Gophers ahead 2-1.
The Golden Gophers went into the second period with a 2-1 advantage. The two teams played even hockey in the second frame as Minnesota put 11 shots on goal compared to Bemidji State's eight.
After playing toe to toe with the Golden Gophers for over 40 minutes Friday night, Minnesota finally put the Beavers away using a Sarah Erickson ace at 8:28 in the third. The Golden Gophers capped the night after BSU had pulled Tomcikova in the final minute when Schoullis sealed her night with a hat trick with 19 seconds remaining in the game.
Montana Vichorek (Sr., D, Moose Lake, Minn.) led BSU with six shots on goal on the night. The Beavers finished with 24 shots on net compared to Minnesota's 50 on the night. The Golden Gophers were led by Schoullis' eight shots on goal. Bemidji High School-product Erickson and Bozek tallied six shots on net. Lauren Williams (Sr., F, Eagan, Minn.), Marlee Wheelhouse (Sr., D, Crookston, Minn.) and Lundquist each tallied three shots on goal.
The game was cleanly played with only three penalties all game with Minnesota getting called for cross-checking in the first period and roughing in the second period and BSU notching a slashing call in the first period.
Minnesota ups their record to 47-3-5 against BSU. Golden Gopher coach Brad Frost is 16-1-2 all-time in match-ups against the Beavers.
Bemidji State will look to find points Saturday as they wrap up the series with Minnesota at 7:07 p.m. at Sanford Center.
