Alex Nelson scored the game-winning goal for the Huskies

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Huskies picked up their first WCHA victory of the 2011-12 season with a 2-1 win over Minnesota State Saturday afternoon at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

After a scoreless first period it was the Mavericks who jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Lauren Barnes scored her second goal of the season for Minnesota State at the 1:43 mark of the second period. She was assisted on the play from Kari Lundberg and Lauren Zrust.

Sydney Burghardt would even things up for the Huskies at the 14:45 mark of the second on her second goal of the season. It was also the second career goal for the sophomore forward from Medicine Hat, Alberta. Senior Jaclyn Daggit and freshman Audrey Hanmer were credited with the assists on the scoring play. For Daggit it was her first game back on the ice since an injury in the Huskies season opener.

The game winner would come at 17:48 of the second period off the stick of junior forward Alex Nelson. For Nelson it was her third of season and 14th of her career. Nelson now has the game winning goal in both wins for the Huskies this season. Assisting Nelson on the scoring play were freshman Abby Ness and senior Brittany Toor. Ness leads the Huskies with seven assists on the season and Toor is right behind her with six helpers of her own.

Freshman goaltender Julie Friend had a big game for St. Cloud State, making 29 saves in a game where SCSU was out shot by MSU 30-18. For Friend it is her second career win for the Huskies.

SCSU (2-16-2, 1-13 WCHA) will now be off until January 6-7, 2012 when they will play host to the Ohio State University Buckeyes at the NHC.
