COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's hockey team captured a 3-1 win over Wilfrid Laurier Friday at the OSU Ice Rink in an exhibition game. Freshmen Kayla Sullivan and Danielle Gagne and senior Melissa Feste tallied a goal apiece for the Buckeyes.
Sullivan put the Scarlet and Gray on the board at 4:37 in the first period as she put in the rebound off a shot by senior Brittany Carlson, who was credited with the assist. Fellow freshman Gagne gave Ohio State a 2-0 lead in the second at 11:30 with tap in the crease with assists going to freshman Taylor Kuehl and junior Hokey Langan.
The Golden Hawks responded quickly with a power play goal just a minute later in a scramble in the kill zone. Katherine Shirriff slipped the puck in from the right post with assists by Maureen Mommersteeg and Laura Brooker at 12:26 in the second.
Feste sealed the win with a score at 8:56 in the third as the senior forward put the puck in from the left side. Earning the assists were sophomores Ally Tarr and Madison Marcotte.
Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Knapp received the start in the net and finished with nine saves, while sophomore Lisa Steffes came in during the second period and tallied 10 saves. Overall, the Buckeyes had a 29-20 advantage in shots.
In true exhibition fashion, the two squads practiced their shoot out skills following regulation. The Buckeyes won 2-1 with goals from junior Paige Semenza and senior Kelly Wild.
Preseason continues as Ohio State hosts its annual Scarlet and Gray game Friday, Sept. 30. Puck drops at 5 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink.
