Wentzville, Mo. --- Lauren Smith and Nicole Germaine each scored twice as the Minnesota State women's hockey team rang in the New Year with a 6-1 win over Lindenwood in a NCAA non-conference collision Tuesday evening at the Lindenwood Ice Arena.
The Mavericks pounced on the Lady Lions with two first-period goals and never looked back. Junior Tracy McCann took a pass from sophomore Casey Hirsch and beat LU netminder Nicole Hensley low on the blocker side at 11:19, and junior Nicole Germaine deflected a slap shot from senior Erika Magnusson into the back of the net at 18:29 of the frame to give MSU a 2-0 lead heading into the locker room.
The Minnesota State power-play joined the scoring barrage at 5:46 of the second period when senior Lauren Smith tallied her 13th goal of the season off assists from McCann and senior Emilia Andersson. Less than three minutes later, Germaine picked up her second marker of the contest when she slid the puck past Hensley and into the right side.
Alyssa West got the Lady Lions on the board at the 13:10 mark, but MSU quickly answered as Smith found twine for the second time at 16:35 to provide the Mavericks with a 5-1 advantage after two periods of play.
Junior Kari Lundberg closed out the scoring for Minnesota State when she beat Hensley over the right pad, unassisted, at 14:28 of the third period.
Smith and Germaine turned in four-point and three-point performances, respectively, for the Mavericks who connected on their lone power-play opportunity while shutting out the Lady Lions on their four power-play chances.
Junior Danielle Butters recorded a game-high 26 saves for Minnesota State who outshot Lindenwood 31-27 in the victory.
MSU (7-11-3 overall, 4-9-3-1 WCHA) aims to pick up the sweep tomorrow afternoon in the series finale with the puck set to drop at 2:00 inside the Lindenwood Ice Arena.
