Wentzville, Mo. - The St. Cloud State women's hockey team finishes up their non-conference series against Lindenwood University Saturday with a 3-2 victory. The Huskies now improve their record to 6-11-1 overall, 2-10-0 in the WCHA.
The Huskies had catch-up to do after Lindenwood put one past freshman goalie Katie Fitzgerald on a power-play at the 13:33 mark of the first period making it a 1-0 game. SCSU was able to tie the game up 1-1 going into the first intermission as Vanessa Spataro fired one into the net on a power-play advantage at the 16:50 mark. Assists were charted to sophomore Abby Ness and junior Julia Gilbert.
The second period was scoreless with Lindenwood outshooting the Huskies 13-10.
St. Cloud State took a 2-1 lead over the Lions midway through the third period on a power-play advantage with Molli Mott on the goal and assisted by Audrey Hanmer and Haylea Schmid. The Lions were able to come back and tie the game up 2-2 at the 18:50 mark of the third period with an extra skater on the ice as they chose to take an empty net for 24 seconds.
The Huskies were not going to take it into overtime as senior Alex Nelson fired one off into the net taking a 3-2 lead at the 19:22 mark of the third period. Nelson was assisted by Molli Mott and Audrey Hanmer on the goal. Shots were even in the third period with both teams recording 16.
Fitzgerald recorded 38 saves for the Huskies to earn the win while the Lions' Taylor Fairchild also recorded 38 saves. Fitzgerald improves her record to 3-6-0 on the season with the win.
St. Cloud State will return to action in the comforts of the National Hockey & Event Center December 7-8 for a WCHA series against Minnesota State University, Mankato. Both games are slated to start at 2:07 p.m.
