COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State hung tough, but was eventually outdueled by the top-ranked team in the nation Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink, falling 5-2 to Minnesota.
After falling down two goals, the Buckeyes battled back with two of their own off the sticks of sophomore Danielle Gagne and senior Hokey Langan to tie the game at 2-all in the second period.
Following a Bethany Brausen score just 2:04 into the game, Ohio State clamped down and the two squads skated to a scoreless remainder of the opening period. Megan Bozek put the Gophers up 2-0 with her 14th goal of the season, coming short-handed 4:47 into the second.
A tripping call on Minnesota's Rachel Bona put the Buckeyes on their third power play of the night and this time they capitalized as Gagne tipped in a goal to cut the lead to 2-1. The goal was number seven for Gagne this season and was assisted by sophomores Sara Schmitt and Kari Schmitt.
Langan would find the back of the net 10:07 into the second, her seventh of the season and number 53 for her career. Assisting on the goal was sophomore Taylor Kuehl.
Minnesota would get back-to back power play opportunities later in the second period and broke through on the second one as Amanda Kessel netted her nation-leading 38th of the season. Rachel Bona and Brausen would add goals in the third period for the Gophers.
Redshirt junior goaltender Chelsea Knapp stopped 31 for the Buckeyes. Nora Raty stopped 18 for Minnesota, who outshot Ohio State 36-20 in the contest.
