The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team appears ready to open up the regular season next weekend after sweeping the Minnesota Whitecaps with a 5-2 win Saturday afternnoon at AMSOIL Arena.
Missing three defensemen (Jessica Wong, Bridgette Lacquette, Tea Villila) and two forwards (Vanessa Thibault and Dana Gallop), the Bulldogs got on the board early and often for a second straight game. Junior forward Jamie Kenyon srtuck just 1:31 into the skate and UMD doubled their lead 3:12 later on a goal by Pernilla Winberg. Katie Wilson pushed that advantage to 3-0 with less than three minutes remaining in the opening period, one of three points the senior center had on the night. Wilson led all scorers on the weekend with a goal and four assists for five points.
The Whitecaps drew to within one goal after netting two scores in the second period, but they would come no closer, as the Bulldogs tacked on power play tallies by sophomores Jenna McParland and Zoe Hickel. McParland left the ice injured with just over 10 minutes remaining after being checked into the boards and the game took a chippy turn in the final stanza. In all, the Whitecaps were called for 13 penalties compared to just five by UMD.
Kayla Black started in goal for the Bulldogs and made 10 saves with two goals against in 40 minutes of time. Sofia Carlstrom was between the pipes for the final period, turning aside 12 shots for UMD.
The Bulldogs open up the regular portion of the 2012-13 season next weekend when they host WCHA for Ohio State at AMSOIL. Friday night's game is slated for a 7:07 p.m.start, while the Saturday matinee will get underway at 4:07 p.m.
