Lauren Smith scored the game-tying goal for the Mavericks

Mankato, Minn. --- Senior Lauren Smith tied a school record by extending her goal-scoring streak to five games as the Minnesota State women's hockey skated to a 2-2 overtime tie against St. Cloud State in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday evening at All Seasons Arena.

The Huskies would take the mandatory shootout by a score of 1-0 on a goal from Audrey Hamner.

Smith - who has 5-2--7 in her five-game scoring streak - is now tied with Michelle Sikich (1999) for the program record.

The Mavericks wasted no time in the opening period as junior Tracy McCann scored at 1:11 by beating SCSU netminder Julie Friend above the blocker off an assist from senior Lauren Smith.

The second period saw back-and-forth action until the Huskies responded at the 12:08 mark on a goal from Haylea Schmid who batted the puck out of mid-air and past junior Danielle Butters to even the score at 1-1.

St. Cloud State took the lead at the 4:04 mark of the third period when Lisa Martinson rifled a shot off the crossbar and in, but MSU answered at 10:59 when Smith twirled a beautiful backhand shot between the pads of Friend to tie the game at 2-2.

Neither team could find twine in the overtime period, but after both squads' initial shooters were denied, Hamner beat Butters on a shot off the left post to provide the Huskies with a 1-0 shootout advantage they would not relinquish.

Smith and McCann both chipped in a goal and an assist for Minnesota State in the match.

The Mavericks were outshot 39-25 on the night and failed to score on their lone power-play opportunity, while St. Cloud State did not have a power-play in the contest. Butters finished with a game-high 37 saves and Friend stopped 23 shots for the Huskies in the draw.

MSU now stands 10-17-4 overall and 6-15-4 in WCHA play as the two programs wrap up the two-game set tomorrow with a 3:07 p.m. scheduled start.
