COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's hockey team topped RIT, 3-1, in a non-conference game Saturday night at the OSU Ice Rink. Three Buckeye seniors in Minttu Tuominen, Hokey Langan and Tina Hollowell picked up goals to lead the squad.
Redshirt junior goaltender Chelsea Knapp picked up her 13th win of the season, stopping 25 of 26 shots on goal. RIT net minder Ali Binnington made 29 saves for the Tigers, who were outshot 32-26.
Tuominen notched her fourth goal of the year in the final seconds of the second period to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead heading into the final intermission. The Espoo, Finland, product scored at 19:46 with a flip shot in the crease with assists to senior Paige Semenza and sophomore Sara Schmitt.
The Buckeyes took a 2-0 lead halfway through the third when Langan picked up her fifth score of the season at 9:51. She was assisted by junior Ally Tarr and sophomore Taylor Kuehl. Hollowell gave Ohio State a 3-0 advantage less than a minute later at 10:37 on the power play. Junior Annie Svedin and Langan had the assists. The assist was the 73rd of Langan's career; moving her into a fourth-place tie on the all-time assists list at Ohio State with former Buckeye Amber Bowman (2005-07).
The Tigers got on the board at 11:38 when Melissa Bromley scored an even-strength goal with assists to Erin Zach and Katie Hubbert.
Ohio State (13-5-1) and RIT will play game two of the series Sunday, with opening face-off set for 2:07 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink.
