DURHAM, N.H. - The Ohio State women's hockey team earned its first series sweep of the season with a 2-0 victory over New Hampshire Sunday afternoon at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N. H.
Senior goaltender Lisa Steffes gave Ohio State its first shut out performance of the season stopping all 21 shots faced and the sweep marked the first time that the Buckeyes have won consecutive games this season.
The Buckeyes penalty kill was solid once again, holding the Wildcats scoreless on all four of their power play chances. The OSU penalty kill was a perfect 6-6 over the weekend.
The Buckeyes jumped out early to a two-goal lead in the first period on scores from junior Danielle Gagne and freshman Claudia Kepler and that would be all they needed to secure the win.
Gagne's score came only 3:25 into the contest as she put a shot past UNH goaltender Ashley Wilkes. Sophomore Melani Moylan picked up the lone assist on the play. Moylan, with a goal scored in yesterday's 3-2 victory, picked up her first multi-point series of the season. Wilkes finished with 19 saves for New Hampshire.
Kepler's score came off a tip of a shot by junior Sara Schmitt at the 13:23 mark of the first and gave the Buckeyes a two-score advantage. Sophomore Julia McKinnon also had an assist on the play along with Schmitt. For Schmitt it was her ninth helper of the season and fifth for McKinnon.
Ohio State (5-9-2, 2-8-2 WCHA) plays host to No. 1 Minnesota this coming Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7-8, at the OSU Ice Rink. Game times are set for 7:07 p.m. Saturday and 12:07 p.m. Sunday.
