BEMIDJI, Minn. - Junior defenseman Ivana Bilic tallied a career-high four points (1g, 3a) as the Bemidji State University women's hockey team defeated Minnesota State University, Mankato, 7-4 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday night at Sanford Center. Bemidji State improves to 9-5-1 and 5-5-1 in league play with the victory.
Minnesota State gained a quick 1-0 advantage as Katie Johnson got one past Brittni Mowat at the 1:01 mark in the first. Bemidji State answered at 10:14 with Bilic's third goal of the season to knot the score 1-1.
MSU regained the lead 11 seconds later with a goal from Hannah Davidson to make it 2-1. Despite outshooting the Mavericks 15-6 in the first stanza, Bemidji State went into the locker room down by the same score.
Bemidji State took the lead for good in the second period as the Beavers tallied four goals to turn a one-goal deficit to a three-goal advantage. Kaitlyn Tougas ignited the scoring at 2:44 with her fourth of the season, while Stephanie Anderson notched her fifth at 6:28 on the power play to give BSU its first lead.
BSU's next two goals came 17 seconds apart as Hanna Moher and Lauren Miller both lit the lamp at the 17:00 and 17:17, respectively to close out the scoring in the second.
Freshman Alexis Joyce kept the pressure on the Mavericks as she netted her second goal of the season just 46 seconds into the third period. Tougas added her second of the game at 8:45 to give the Beavers a 7-2 advantage.
Minnesota State cut the deficit to three with goals by Shelby Moteyunas and Katie Johnson, but that's as close it would get as Bemidji State held on for its sixth win in its last seven games.
Next up: Bemidji State will look to complete its fourth sweep of the season tomorrow in the series finale. The puck drops at 4:07 p.m. from Sanford Center.
