BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) - The Bemidji State University women's hockey team defeated Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) rival St. Cloud State University 3-1 Friday evening at Sanford Center. With the victory, the Beavers improve to 15-13-1 overall and 10-12-1 in league play, while the Huskies move to 6-22-1 overall and 3-18-1 in conference play.
After a scoreless first frame, the Beavers broke the tie in the second scoring twice against SCSU net minder Katie Fitzgerald. Kaitlyn Tougas scored her eighth of the season to get the scoring started at the thirteen minute, fifty-five second mark in the second with her first power-play goal of the season. The goal was set up by a SCSU slashing penalty at 12:53.
Tougas' goal was followed by one from fellow junior Hanna Moher at 17:23 to extend the Beavers' lead to 2-0 heading into the final period.
St. Cloud State got on the board at the 19:33 mark of the third period with an extra-attacker goal by Audrey Hanmer to cut the deficit to one. The Huskies' momentum was short-lived though as the Beavers' Stephanie Anderson tallied an empty-net goal at 19:52 to seal the 3-1 victory for Bemidji State.
Sophomore Brittni Mowat made 24 saves and improved her record to 13-9-1 this season. Mowat's 13 victories tie a program record for the most victories in a single season by a BSU goaltender, which was set during the 2011-12 season when Zuzana Tomcikova also had 13 wins.
Notes on Bemidji State
With the victory tonight, the Beavers have 15 victories this season, which is the second-most by a team in program history tying the 1999-00 squad. BSU needs just two more wins to tie the program record for victories in a season (17), which was set during the 2011-12 campaign.
Kaitlyn Tougas netted her 23rd career goal in tonight's game, which puts the Thunder Bay, Ontario native 18th on BSU's all-time goal scoring list. Tougas needs to light the lamp just three more times to tie former teammate Sadie Lundquist for 17th all-time with 26 goals.
Defenseman Ivana Bilic tallied a pair of assists against the Huskies, which brings her to 35 career points (10g, 25a). Bilic's 35 points are the fourth-most by a blue liner in program history trailing only Lisa Peters (96), Montana Vichorek (77), Erika and Marlee Wheelhouse (51).
Junior Stephanie Anderson notched her tenth goal of the season to seal BSU's victory. The 10 goals are the most for a BSU player since the 2012-13 season when Natasha Kostenko also had 10 goals.
With the victory, the Beavers even the all-time series against St. Cloud State at 31-31-8. If the Beavers can complete the sweep tomorrow, it will be the fourth time in the last five seasons that BSU has won the season series between the two teams.
Next up: Bemidji State and St. Cloud State will wrap their series tomorrow afternoon with a 4:07 p.m. puck drop from Sanford Center. Fans are encouraged to bring their skates for a chance to meet the Beavers and get autographs and "Skate with the Beavers" following the game.
