Meghan Huertas is on fire.
The University of Minnesota Duluth senior winger scored two goals - including the game-winner - to help lift the Bulldogs over Lindenwood University 3-1 at AMSOIL Arena Saturday afternoon. The win brings the Bulldog within a single win of .500 on the season with an overall record of 3-4-2.
"My linemates are great and they give me great feeds, and if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be getting those shots on net," said Huertas. "I was really proud of my team, we played great and stuck to the game plan. We had a lot of fun out there."
Huertas has netted three of the Bulldogs last four goals, and followed up her game-winning goal against North Dakota one week ago by scoring the first two Bulldog goals Saturday. Huertas started the passing sequence, laying the off puck to Emma Stauber at the point. Stauber swung it to Lara Stalder out wide, and Huertas parlayed Stalder's pass in the slot into the back of the net at 5:18 of the first period.
UMD's second goal 10:37 into the second period was a result of a Stalder face-off win to the right of Lion netminder Nicole Hensley. Stalder poked the puck to a glaringly open Huertas off the draw for Huertas' second goal of the afternoon. Just 2:31 later, sophomore forward Ashleigh Brykaliuk banged home a cross-crease pass from Katerina Mrázová that originated from Bridgette Lacquette to give the Bulldogs a solid 3-0 lead.
Former UMD forward Shara Jasper broke Bulldog goaltender Kayla Black's 118:20 shutout streak with a shot from just inside the UMD blue line at 17:40 in the third stanza. Black made 24 saves on the day, while Hensley turned away 28 Bulldog shots. UMD outshot the Lions 31-25 in the contest and netted two power play goals in four opportunities.
The Bulldogs and Lions will face-off again tomorrow afternoon at AMSOIL Arena at 3:07 p.m. Bidding on UMD's special pink uniforms will take place until the end of the second period tomorrow.
