DULUTH, Minn. - No. 10 University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team had no issues shooting the puck Saturday afternoon.
Putting on net the most shots by a Bulldog squad since Oct. 23, 2010, UMD buried Minnesota State University, Mankato with 62 shots in the Bulldogs' 3-0 win at AMSOIL Arena. Not only did UMD shell the Mavericks, it also held them without a single shot in the entire third period. The Bulldogs outshot MSU 62-15 in the game and 28-0 in the final stanza.
Newly minted 100 point club member Jenna McParland netted UMD's first goal with 50 seconds remaining in the opening period, a clean shot in the slot that beat Erin Krichiver five-hole. The Bulldogs would get their second goal 5:59 into the second period off a MSU turnover behind the the Mavericks net. Rookie forward Michelle Lowenhielm found herself alone behind the goal and slipped the puck to senior center Brienna Gillanders at the bottom of the right circle. Gillander one-timed the puck past Krichiver for her first goal of the season, giving UMD the 2-0 lead.
McParland capped off the Bulldogs scoring similar to how she started it, roofing a rebound courtsey of Brigette Lacquette's blast from the left point for a power play goal at 8:22 of the third period. From there, UMD would pour it on, driling MSU with 28 shots and holding the Mavericks offense utterly useless without a single shot.
Junior Bulldog goaltender Kayla Black got her 12th career shutout in the win, making 15 saves in the game. Krichiver, to her credit, made 59 saves for MSU.
UMD (5-4-2, 2-4-1) will try to extend its current four-game winning streak tomorrow afternoon at AMSOIL against the Mavericks at 3:07 p.m.
