ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Three special-teams goals powered the University of North Dakota women's hockey team to a 4-0 win over St. Cloud State on the road Friday night at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
North Dakota scored twice on the power play and once shorthanded to earn the win over the Huskies. With the victory, UND improves to 17-11-3 (13-9-3-2 WCHA) and takes over third place in the conference standings from Minnesota Duluth. The Huskies fell to 6-24-1 (3-20-1-1 WCHA) and remain in seventh place.
After a scoreless first period, North Dakota wasted little time getting on the board in the second. Just 23 seconds into the first power-play chance of the night, Meghan Dufault scored to put UND up 1-0. Becca Kohler caught Dufault driving to the net and Dufault got her stick on it to one-time the puck past SCSU goaltender Katie Fitzgerald.
Kohler then added one of her own on the power play more than halfway through the period. North Dakota's top line of Kohler, Dufault, and Amy Menke put together a nice sequence, with Kohler finishing the play off a pass from Menke down low.
UND scored its final special-teams goal of the night at the very end of the game. St. Cloud State went on a power play with about two minutes left in the third period and pulled Fitzgerald for the extra attacker while trailing by three. With just over a minute remaining, Menke capped off the 6-on-4 penalty kill with a shorthanded empty-net goal. She is now tied for the national lead with three shorthanded tallies on the season.
In all, UND went two-for-two on the power play against the Huskies and was a perfect four-for-four on the penalty kill in a dominant performance in all situations.
Josefine Jakobsen scored the third goal for North Dakota about six minutes into the third period. With a goal and an assist, she extended her point streak to five games and has four goals and two assists in that stretch.
Goaltender Shelby Amsley-Benzie picked up the shutout in net, stopping all 16 shots she faced. It was her sixth shutout of the season and her third in the last five games.
UND goes for the sweep tomorrow afternoon against St. Cloud State. Puck drop is set for 3 p.m. (CT) at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
