COLUMBUS, Ohio - Claudia Kepler's second-period goal lifted the Ohio State women's hockey team to a 1-0 season-opening win over New Hampshire Friday evening at the OSU Ice Rink. In the first contest of her Buckeye career, freshman goalie Kassidy Sauve recorded 24 saves for the shutout.

The Buckeyes, now 1-0-0 on the year, and the Wildcats (0-2-0, 0-1-0 WHEA) will close out the series at 2:07 p.m. Saturday in Columbus.

The teams were scoreless after the first. Sauve had nine saves in the period, as the Buckeyes were outshot, 9-7. Both squads had one power play chance in the stanza.

In the second, Kepler, a sophomore from Verona, Wis., beat UNH goalie Vilma Vaattovaara in front of the net off of a rebounded shot by Kendall Curtis. Bryanna Neuwald picked up the second assist. Ohio State's penalty kill unit held strong through two UNH power play opportunities. Shots were 8-7 in favor of the Wildcats, as Sauve was credited with eight saves

New Hampshire had an opportunity on the power play late but the Buckeye defense held strong.

Ohio State outshot New Hampshire for the game 25-24. Neither team scored on the power play. Ohio State was 0-for-3 and New Hampshire was 0-for-4.
