BEMIDJI, Minn. - The No. 7 Bemidji State University women's hockey team fell to the University of Minnesota Duluth, 5-1, Friday afternoon in the first game of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association quarterfinals. The Beavers (22-10-3, 17-10-2 WCHA) will try to even the best-of-three series tomorrow when they host the Bulldogs (14-20-1, 10-17-1 WCHA) at 2:07 p.m. from the Sanford Center.
Sophomore Alexis Joyce scored the lone goal for the Beavers, her eighth of the season and was the only Beaver to tally a point in the loss.
Minnesota Duluth scored first despite a mostly defensive first period, but were able to beat the Beaver defense with just 1:13 when Katherine McGovern took advantage of a turnover.
The Bulldogs didn't hesitate to add another and just 15 seconds into the second period, Michela Cava scored to give UMD the 2-0 lead. Minnesota Duluth made it 3-0 just 1:20 later when McGovern tallied her second goal of the game. The Beavers finally broke the Bulldogs defense when Joyce skated through the zone to pull the Beavers within two at 15:27. However, just 1:18 later, Minnesota Duluth regained the three-goal lead after its leading scorer Ashleigh Brykaliuk scored on the power play.
UMD would make it 5-1 halfway through the third period when Lara Stalder scored her 16th goal of the season, and third point on the day.
Junior Brittni Mowat earned just her 10th loss on the season after allowing five goals on 27 shots. Kayla Black for the Bulldogs was exceptional in net and stopped 33-of-34 shots including 13 in the final period.
The Beavers and Bulldogs will see each other again tomorrow as the Beavers hope to even the WCHA Quarterfinal series at one.
