BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- Senior Kaitlyn Tougas netted two power-play goals, while Brittni Mowat turned aside 24 shots to lead the Bemidji State University women's hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Minnesota Sate University, Mankato Saturday at Sanford Center. The victory gave the Beavers' three points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings and a series sweep.
With the victory, Mowat tied BSU great Zuzana Tomcikova for the Beaver women's hockey record for career wins with 41.
Kristin Huber added two assists in the game and Hanna Moher posted the game-winning goal.
Bemidji State got another strong start against the Mavericks when Tougas scored 2:39 into the game to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead. Minnesota State would tie it in the period however, when a shot by Lena Duesterhoeft deflected off a BSU defender and went past Mowat. BSU would answer back late in the period when Moher scored her fifth goal of the season and pushed the Beavers lead to 2-1. Bemidji State dominated play in the period, and out-shot the Mavericks 9-3.
Minnesota State would rally back in the second period and out-shot Bemidji State 13-4. However, Mowat recovered from the first period goal and turned away all 13 shots by the Mavericks and BSU held a 2-1 lead entering the third period.
Looking to extend their lead, the Beavers dominated play in their offensive zone and tested goaltender Brianna Quade with 18 shots in the period. Quade stopped most of the shots by the Beavers but Tougas beat her for the second time with 5:16 remaining. BSU would close out the game without allowing another goal and earned the series sweep with a 3-1 victory.
Bemidji State, now 12-4-2 overall and 9-4-1 in WCHA play, will return to action Dec. 4 when they host the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks for the opening game of a home-and-home series. The opening faceoff is set for 7:07 p.m at Sanford Center.
