BEMIDJI, Minn. - The No. 6 Bemidji State University women's hockey team defeated St. Cloud State University 3-1, Friday night in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play. The Beavers (7-2-2, 4-2-1 WCHA) scored all three goals in the third period, including two by senior Stephanie Anderson.
Anderson led the Beavers with two goals, including the game-winner, while Kaitlyn Tougas and Ivana Bilic both tallied two assists. Senior Hanna Moher added the empty-net goal for her third goal of the season, while sophomore Alexis Joyce added an assist to round out the Beaver scoring.
Junior Brittni Mowat earned her seventh victory of the season and improved her record to 7-2-1. Mowat kept the Huskies scoreless for 58:19, but lost her fourth shutout of the season when Lauren Hespenheide scored while SCSU had the extra attacker.
St. Cloud State started the game by pressuring Bemidji State and out-shot the Beavers 12-10 in the first period. The Beavers defense didn't falter, however, and both teams skated into the locker room in a scoreless tie.
In the second period, BSU came out on the attack but SCSU's goaltender, Katie Fitzgerald, was solid in net and stopped all 13 shots by the Beavers in the period.
Bemidji State would continue pressuring St. Cloud State in the third period, and after a total of eight periods in three games, the Beavers got on the scoreboard when Anderson scored 5:39 into the period. Goals just started to flow for BSU from then on, and Anderson tallied her second of the game seven minutes later.
St. Cloud pulled Fitzgerald in favor of the extra attacker with nearly three minutes remaining, and after multiple failed attempts by Bemidji State to score on the empty net, St. Cloud State capitalized and scored with 1:28 left. Moher would take advantage of an opportunity to score on the empty net, and put the Beavers ahead, 3-1, with :03 remaining.
Mowat faced 29 shots by the Huskies and made 28 saves, while the Beavers special teams stopped all four power plays for St. Cloud State and went 1-for-4 in their own end with the advantage.
Bemidji State and St. Cloud State will wrap-up the two game series, tomorrow at 4:07 p.m. from Sanford Center.
