COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Late power play opportunities were not enough for the Ohio State women's hockey team to defeat St. Cloud State University on Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes (7-16-0, 3-14-0 WCHA) fell by a score of 2-1 against SCSU (11-8-2, 7-8-2 WCHA).
The first period started off with a series of strong shots from Ohio State, including a close one to the crossbar by defenseman Dani Sadek. Ohio State went on the power play just after two minutes into the period when St. Cloud State University's Kelsey Saelens drew a tripping penalty. Special teams were unable to convert, but continued to dominate the shots throughout the period, 10-3.
Despite Ohio State's effort, St. Cloud State got on the board first when right wing Hannah Potrykus slid the puck past traffic in front of the Ohio State net. The goal came 12:35 into the first period unassisted.
In the second period, the Buckeyes scored an equalizer at 8:29 after back and forth play. Junior center Julia McKinnon garnered her third goal of the season on a rebound shot just after defenseman Cara Zubko sent the puck to the net.
St. Cloud State wasted no time answering with a goal just over two minutes after the lone Buckeye goal of the game. Husky Julia Tylke notched the game-winning goal with help from Lexi Slattery and Molly Illikainen at 10:26 in the second period.
The third period involved five penalties, three drawn by Ohio State and two drawn by St. Cloud State. The Buckeyes held their own when two penalties were called on Ohio State at 9:21 in the third. The Scarlet and Gray penalty kill was 4-4 in the game.
Later in the period, Ohio State had two power play chances but was unable to score a tying goal. The Buckeyes finished the game 0-3 on the power play. Sophomore goaltender Alex LaMere appeared in her seventeenth game for the Buckeyes, recording eighteen saves. SCSU's Katie Fitzgerald made 24 stops for the Huskies.
Ohio State will return to the ice for a rematch against St. Cloud State on Saturday at 4:07 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink.
