Three times Friday night No. 3 Boston College thought it had finally overtaken the fiesty Bulldogs, and three times senior forward Ashleigh Brykaliuk proved them wrong.
Behind a hat-trick from Brykaliuk, the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team earned an overtime tie with the third-ranked Eagles 3-3 at AMSOIL Arena, in Duluth, Minn. The tie also keeps the Maura Crowell era unbeaten in season openers (1-0-1) and moves UMD to an impressive 13-3-2 overall to open up regular season play.
BC got on the board just 17 seconds into the first period on a goal by Haley McLean, but the Bulldogs fought back and finally equalized behind Brykaliuk's first goal at 15:45. The Eagles responded less than two minutes later with a power play goal, and after one stanza in the books, UMD trailed BC 2-1.
Brykaliuk and the Bulldogs knotted the game at 2-2 13:12 into the second period, cashing in Katerina Mrázová's second assist on the evening. The Eagles again took the lead for the third time in skate with their second power play tally 3:04 into the third period. Enter Brykaliuk once more, who connected for her third goal of the night and her first power play tally of the season with 5:01 remaining in regulation to draw the game even at 3-3.
Neither team hit paydirt in the five minute overtime, and the Eagles had a slight shots on goal advantage at the end of 34-30. Sophomore Maddie Rooney had 31 saves in the contest, while her counterpart in net for BC, Katie Burt, made 27 stops for the Eagles, who like the Bulldogs, start the season 0-0-1.
Both squads will hit the ice again Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. for the series finale.
