BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University women's hockey dropped game one of its Western Collegiate Hockey Association series with University of North Dakota, 3-1, Friday night.

The Fighting Hawks scored two goals in the first period but the Beavers (9-14-2, 5-14-2 WCHA) rallied in the second when Emily Bergland scored a power-play goal. Alexis Joyce and Lauren Miller each tallied assists in the game while goaltender Brittni Mowat 24-of-26 saves.

Much of the start of the first period was an even battle between the two teams but BSU seemed to gain an edge when Sarah Lecavalier went to the penalty box at 11:13, the Beavers were unable to score during the power-play but a timely bounce for the Fighting Hawks sprung Lecavalier on a breakaway just as she came out of the box. She capitalized on the opportunity and tallied the first goal of the game at 13:21. North Dakota added to its lead with just 2:41 left in the first when Amy Menke batted home a rebounded from Lecavalier for the 2-0 lead.

The Beavers would look to roll in the second period and when another Fighting Hawk was called for a penalty, Bergland was able to find a loose put in the crease and score her team-leading 10th goal of the season to cut UND's lead to one. However, the Beavers were unable to tie the score in the remaining period.

Bemidji State increased pressure in its offensive zone and it showed on the scoreboard with the Beavers outshooting the Fighting Hawks 15-9 in the final period. However, BSU was unable to beat goaltender Lexie Shaw. With a Fighting Hawk in the penalty box, BSU pulled Mowat with under two minutes remaining for a six-on-four power play but Charly Dahlquist would capitalize and score an empty-net goal at 18:23.

The Beavers ended the game by losing 3-1 but outshot the Fighting Hawks, 35-26. Bemidji State finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play while UND went 0-for-1.

Bemidji State and North Dakota will have Saturday off before meeting again Sunday, Jan. 29 for the series finale at 2:07 p.m.
