GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota women's hockey team fell in overtime, 3-2, to Ohio State to open the best-of-three series for the first round of WCHA playoffs on Friday afternoon.

Like the regular-season games against Ohio State, the Fighting Hawks out-shot the Buckeyes, 33-14, but failed to come away with the win. The game marks the first first-round playoff lost for North Dakota (14-15-6) in Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Ohio State (14-16-5) recorded just three shots on net after the second period, but ended up scoring two goals off of unlucky bounces in that span.

The Fighting Hawks got on the board first when Amy Menke scored her ninth goal of the season at the 10:19 mark of the first period. Menke corralled the puck after a turnover in the OSU end and carried in on net, cutting across the front of the crease to score the unassisted goal.

UND completely out-played OSU in the first period, out-shooting the Buckeyes 12-2 in the frame, but only had the lone goal to show for it.

Ohio State mounted a stronger second period, scoring a goal on a two-on-one break, while also receiving help after North Dakota's Amy Menke was ejected for a checking from behind penalty at the 17:45 mark. The Fighting Hawks, however, were able to successfully kill off the five-minute major during the end of the second period and into the start of the third.

After killing off the major, UND went back to controlling the game, out-shooting OSU, 10-2, in the period. Unfortunately, another bad bounce led to an Ohio State goal at the 7:59 mark to give the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead.

North Dakota's efforts in the third period finally paid off with three minutes remaining in regulation. With a scramble in front of the net, Jordan Hampton found the loose puck and put it into the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.

The game headed into overtime, but UND would be on the receiving end of another unlucky bounce.

Ohio State's Lauren Boyle took a shot from the point that hit off a UND defenseman's stick and redirected past Lexie Shaw to end the game on OSU's only shot in the overtime period.

North Dakota and Ohio State play in game two, in this best-of-three series, tomorrow at 2:07 p.m. (CT) back at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
