GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Three different skaters scored as the No. 10 UND women's hockey team completed the weekend sweep against St. Cloud State on Sunday afternoon at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
The sweep is just the third of the season for North Dakota (9-6-5, 7-5-4-2 WCHA), as the Fighting Hawks finished off the weekend series in dominating fashion. St. Cloud State (5-14-1, 4-11-1-1 WCHA) was limited to just 11 shots on net, and did not register its first shot on goal until six minutes into the second period. UND finished the contest out-shooting the Huskies 23-11.
North Dakota got things rolling right off from the get go and scored on the first shift of the game for the second consecutive night. After Alyssa MacMillan scored 36 seconds into the weekend's first game, fellow freshman Ryleigh Houston netted her fourth goal of the season just 32 seconds after the puck dropped.
The goal would prove to be the only tally in the first period, as the two sides entered the first intermission with the Fighting Hawks out-shooting the Huskies 8-0.
In the second period, Hallie Theodosopoulos became the fourth freshman for UND to score a goal on the weekend. After a neutral-zone turnover by the Huskies, Charly Dahlquist dished the puck over to Theodosopoulos, who then fired a shot off the near post and in for her third goal of the season and to put UND up 2-0 in the period's first six minutes.
Less than four minutes later, senior Kayla Gardner scored on the backdoor for her second of the season. The play started up high with defenseman Anna Kilponen, who moved to the puck down low to fellow Finn Emma Nuutinen. Nuutinen then found Gardner on the far side of the net and powered the puck past SCSU netminder Janine Alder for UND's sixth goal of the weekend.
After having a relatively quiet night in net, senior goaltender Lexie Shaw was put to the test in the waning minutes of the game as she faced-off against SCSU's Brittney Anderon on a breakaway. Shaw made a sprawling pad save to help record her fifth shutout of the season.
St. Cloud State went with an empty net in the final three minutes of the game, and Gardner capitalized on the empty-net to secure the 4-0 win for UND.
North Dakota finishes off the 2016 calendar year with a road series next weekend, Dec. 16-17, against Lindenwood in Wentzville, Mo.
