Bemidji, Minn. - Senior Emma Terres scored the game's first two goals and redshirt freshman Lauren Bench recorded a 26-save shutout in her first career start to lead the Bemidji State University women's hockey team to a 5-0 win over Syracuse University, Saturday afternoon.

The Beavers (1-0-1, 0-0-0 WCHA) earn their first win of the 2017-18 campaign while the Orange fall to 0-1-1 (0-0-0 CHA).

"Really proud of the effort today, from the goal out I thought we were pretty good" said head coach Jim Scanlan. "Kudos to Lauren Bench for earning a shutout in her first career start but I thought all four lines were rolling and just really happy about the performance today."

The Beavers didn't waste any time to tally their first mark of the game when Terres bounced the puck off a defenders skate in the back of the net for her first goal of the game and season just 40 seconds into the first period. Terres would find the back of the net again before the period's end and at 10:33 redirected a shot from Alexis Joyce to put BSU up 2-0.

Bemidji State would add to its lead 6:10 into the second period when freshman Lindsey Featherstone scored her first collegiate goal in her first game wearing a BSU sweater. Featherstone's goal in the second would be the only tally for BSU but the Beavers increased their lead to five when Haley Mack and Jacqueline Kaasa scored their first goals of the season at the 1:35 and 17:32 marks of the third period, respectively.

In total, four different Beavers tallied a goal in the game while nine Beavers recorded an assist.

Redshirt freshman Bench started off her career for the Beavers in the best possible way, earning a 26-save shutout in her first start for the Beavers. Bench turned aside all 26 shots by the Orange including nine during the last period to earn her first win.

The Beavers will have a tough test next weekend when they travel to Potsdam, N.Y., to take on the defending national champions and top-ranked Clarkson University. The Beavers and Golden Knights face-off for a two-game series Oct. 6-7 with puck drop at 2 p.m. CST each day.
