Sophomore forward Laura Kluge posts two goals and three assists for Huskies

The St. Cloud State women's hockey team shutout the Hockey Training Institute 9-0 in their exhibition game on Saturday, September 22.

The first period saw little action. Each team had one penalty and no goals were scored. Things picked up quickly after the first intermission as recently appointed team captain, Kayla Friesen put the first point on the scoreboard. Her first goal, at 6:11 of the second period, was assisted by Laura Kluge and Hannah Potrykus.

"I think as the game went on a lot of the girls got their confidence and started communicating better. Once we got one, it loosened everyone up a bit," said Friesen.

Then the goals started flooding in, Friesen again, just moments later, put a puck past the HTI goaltender at 6:28, assisted for a second time by both Kluge and Potrykus. SCSU's third goal came from Janna Haeg at 9:09 of the second period, assisted by Ivy Dynek and Dana Rasmussen.

Three more goals in the last 10 minutes of the period put St. Cloud into a difficult to chase, 6-0 lead by the second intermission. Goals came from Potrykus, Haeg, and Kluge to round up the second period scoring.

Starting the final period of play, Kluge put up back-to-back goals, scoring at 6:07 of the third period, assisted by Abby Thiessen and Friesen.

Freshman defender, Olivia Hanson added her name to the score sheet at 6:45 of the third period, giving SCSU their eighth goal of the night. Hanson's goal was assisted by Jenniina Nylund and Thiessen.

For good measure, St. Cloud's Potrykus scored a goal with 50 seconds left in the game, giving SCSU's top line a total of six goals scored. Potrykus's second goal of the night was assisted by Tatum Coats.

"These exhibition games, you hope to get your top players some confidence and ready for (the future), and I certainly think that happened tonight," said head coach Eric Rud

Final shots on goal were 68 for SCSU and 13 for HTI. Each team had three penalties assessed in the game; St. Cloud's fourth goal was scored on a power play in the second period.

St. Cloud's three goaltenders, Janine Alder (7 saves), Emma Polusny (3 saves), and Karlie Ries (3 saves) combined for a shutout win.

The St. Cloud State women's hockey team open up their regular season play on the road next weekend against the University of Connecticut. The Huskies return home October 5 and 6 for a weekend home series against RIT.
