ST. CLOUD, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University women's hockey team (2-3-0, 0-1-0 WCHA) fell 6-2 to the No. 3 Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-0-1, 2-0-1 WCHA) Friday, October 12 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

The Gophers dominated SCSU through the first period, scoring two even strength goals and one on the power play. Nicole Schammel put one to the back of the net to get things started for Minnesota, then Taylor Heise scored two in the last half of the period to put them up 3-0 going into the third.

Blueliner Taylor Wemple got the Huskies on the board at 2:23 of the second period with a bomb of a shot through a three-player screen in front of the Minnesota goaltender. Wemple was assisted by Julia Tylke and Jenniina Nylund.

Nylund kept things rolling for the Huskies, putting them within one with her first collegiate goal at 9:39 of the second period. Her goal was assisted by Tylke and Wemple.

The Gophers stifled the Huskies momentum with two goals near the end of the second period. Minnesota led SCSU 5-2 going into the third. Sarah Potomak of Minnesota tallied one more in the third period to top off the Gopher's final 6-2 win.

St. Cloud's Emma Polusny made 44 saves out of 50 shots on goal. The Gopher's Alex Gulstene totaled 16 saves. SCSU did not get a power play opportunity in the game but went 2-4 in the penalty kill.

"When you get into league play against some of the best teams in the country you can't get put into a negative spot," said Huskies' head coach Eric Rud. "What I'm excited about is that we scored two legit goals and we probably had five more legitimate chances to score, which we haven't had in the past. That's a sign that we're getting better...a good sign of a way we can move forward."

SCSU will play game two against the Gophers tomorrow at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. The St. Cloud State women's hockey team will not return home to the Brooks Center until October 26 for a weekend series against the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs.
