COLUMBUS, Ohio - Charly Dahlquist went on a tear in the third, notching a hat trick in 3:33 of game time, to help give The Ohio State University women's ice hockey team a 9-2 win over the Mercyhurst University Lakers on Sunday at the OSU Ice Rink.

The Nitty Gritty

- It looked like the fans in for another low scoring game as neither team scored through most of the first, but Tatum Skaggs broke the stalemate with her 12th goal of the season with 1:05 left in the first.

- All it took was Skaggs to break the seal and open the door for Paetyn Levis to score the first goal of her career just 33 seconds later to send the Buckeyes to the intermission with a 2-0 lead.

- Emma Maltais added to that lead early in the second when she scored her ninth goal of the year to make it 3-0 OSU.

- The Lakers would not go quietly, however, as Sarah Nelles put Mercyhurst on the board just 5:48 into the second.

- With Skaggs in the penalty box the Buckeyes put their trusted penalty kill unit out, and that's when Jacyn Reeves struck to get a short-handed goal and put the Buckeyes up 4-1 heading into the third.

- At the 6:22 mark of the third Dahlquist notched her first goal, and the Lakers responded almost instantly with a goal from Molly Blasen to make it 5-2.

- From there Ohio State unleashed the hounds, Dahlquist netted her second goal of the game at 6:53, followed by a Liz Schepers goal at 7:46. Dahlquist finished her onslaught with the third goal at 9:55, scoring all three goals in a 3:33 span of the third period.

- Things settled down, but Schepers found herself in the right spot to finish off a play with 22 seconds remaining to seal a 9-2 win for the Buckeyes.

- The nine goals scored are the most for any OSU team since the Buckeyes scored 10 goals, the program record, against Bemidji State in 2012.

- Dahlquist's hat trick is the first of her career. She also added an assist to finish with four points. Her three goals scored in one period also tie the program high, held by Natalie Spooner (three goals in one period against Minnesota State, December 12 2008)

- Skaggs added three assists in the game to finish with four points as well. All three of her assists came in the third period, tying her for the record for most assists in one period.

- In total 10 different Buckeyes tallied assists, led by the three for Skaggs. Sophie Jaques, Jincy Dunne and Madison Bizal notched two assists each. Dahlquist, Maltais, Olivia Soares, Lisa Bruno, Erin Langermeier and Elise Riemenschneider all notched one assist.

- The five goals scored in the third tie the program record for goals scored in a single period, and the nine assists tallied in the third also tie the single game program record.

First Period

It took nearly 19 minutes for someone to score, but quick goals from Skaggs and Levis gave the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead heading to the second. OSU outshot Mercyhurst 15-to-8 in the opening period.

Second Period

Both teams added to their scores in the second, but the Buckeyes took a commanding 4-1 lead into the break thanks to goals from Maltais and Reeves. Ohio State also took a 12-to-10 shots-on-goal advantage into the final frame.

Third Period

Last season the Buckeyes took a lead into the third of their finale with the Lakers only to see it evaporate in the closing moments, that would not happen again this year. Dahlquist opened up a furious 3:33 of game time with her first goal of the game. Mercyhurst responded with a goal from Blasen, but Dahlquist added two more and Schepers scored one for good measure to put the Buckeyes comfortably in front. Looking for the exclamation point, Schepers finished things off with her second of the period with less than a minute to play to clinch a 9-2 win.

What's Next?

The Buckeyes are off for the holidays and return to the ice on January 5-6 for an exhibition series with the Minnesota Whitecaps. Both games of that series will be at the OSU Ice Rink.
