ST. CLOUD, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University Huskies women's hockey team (8-20-2, 3-16-0 WCHA) were swept and held to a no goal game for the second night in a row against #9 Ohio State University Buckeyes (17-11-0, 11-9-0 WCHA) at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center Friday, Feb. 2.
It was déjà vu after the first period at the Hockey Center, Ohio State once again went into the intermission with a 1-0 lead over the Huskies. Tatum Skaggs scored her 14th goal of the season for OSU at 13:54 of the period.
The Buckeye's added another in the second period and led the Huskies 2-0 heading into the third. Madison Field scored Ohio's second goal.
Though the Huskies battled to comeback from that two-goal deficit, penalties did them in in the final 20 minutes. Ohio State would score two power play goals and an empty-net goal before the final buzzer to give OSU the 5-0 win.
St. Cloud State's goaltender Janine Alder stopped 43 shots in the game; the Buckeye's Andrea Braendli had 28 saves in her second shutout in as many days. Final shots on goal from today's game were SCSU 28, OSU 48. St. Cloud went 0-3 on the power play and 2-4 on the penalty kill.
"The score was not indicative of the way the game way played at all, but I thought overall there was a much better effort (from yesterday)," said Huskies' Head Coach Eric Rud. "Tonight we needed our power play to make a play, but there was no execution there. Our movement and ideas were decent, but need to (make the play)."
The women's hockey teams plays in a rare mid-week game this Tuesday, February 5 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Huskies face the Mavericks in their final WCHA matchup of the season. That game starts at 6:07 p.m.
