Ohio State Edged by St. Lawrence, 3-2

CANTON, N.Y. - The Ohio State University women's ice hockey team nearly mounted a comeback, but could not overcome some costly penalties in its series opener at the No. 10 St. Lawrence Saints on Friday night in Appleton Arena.

The Nitty Gritty

- Ohio State fell behind early on a power play goal from Skylar Podvey. Steph Keryluk converted another power play opportunity in the opening period to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.

- Jincy Dunne got things started for the Buckeyes in the second, netting her first goal of the year at the 8:51 point of the period.

- Tatum Skaggs found the back of the net 30 seconds into the third period to tie the game at 2-2.

- With less than 10 minutes remaining, Natalie Wozney scored to give St. Lawrence a 3-2 lead.

- Ohio State pulled goaltender Andrea Braendli with less than 90 seconds to play, but could not score with the extra skater and fell to the Saints 3-2.

- Madison Bizal notched the first point of her Buckeye career with an assist on the Skaggs goal. Jacyn Reeves tallied her first point of the season with an assist on the same goal.

First Period

The Buckeyes had only allowed one power play goal all year coming into the game, but conceded two in the opening 10 minutes of the period to give St. Lawrence a 2-0 advantage. Liz Schepers nearly cut into the lead when she had a fantastic look late in the first, but could not get past SLU goaltender Grace Harrison and OSU went into the locker room trailing 2-0.

Second Period

Ohio State started chipping away at the St. Lawrence lead with Dunne's goal, her first of the season, near the midway point of the period. The Buckeyes outshot the Saints in the second, 11-to-7, but could not score an equalizer and went to the third trailing 2-1.

Third Period

In the opening moments of the period Skaggs redirected a puck from Bizal to tickle the twine and knot things up at 2-2. OSU continued to pressure the Saints by putting 14 shots-on-goal in the final period, but Wozney's goal at 11:54 proved to the game winner as the Buckeyes could not score an equalizer and dropped the series opener. Braendli finished with 19 saves.

What's Next?

The Buckeyes look to bounce back on Saturday and earn a split with the Saints. Puck drop for the series finale is set for 3 p.m. in Appleton Arena.
