Junior forward Lydia Passolt scored a goal for the Beavers
Bemidji State Edged by Lindenwood, 3-2

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University women's hockey team out-shot its opponent Lindenwood University 32-16 but Lions' goaltender Sophie Wolf held the Beavers to just two goals in BSU's 3-2 season-opening loss Friday night. After the Beavers (0-1-0) scored the game's opening goal, the Lions (1-2-0) scored three-unanswered goals, all in the first period, en-route to the 3-2 victory.

Bemidji State started the scoring 8:11 into the opening frame when junior Lydia Passolt scored the season's first goal. However, the Lions responded fairly quickly and just 2:35 later, tied the game off the stick of Hannah Alt. The Lions took the lead from the Beavers when Kayla Martinez scored 2:35 after Alt's tally. Lindenwood wasn't finished and just 1:44 later Lokelani Anotonio extended the Lions' lead to 3-1.

Head coach Jim Scanlan called a timeout after the goal and told his team to be smart defensively and that there was a lot of hockey left to be played. The timeout seemed to work and after the first intermission, the Beavers came out looking to pull within one. Bemidji State dominated the middle frame and outshot Lindenwood 14-4 but Wolf remained strong and kept BSU off the scoreboard.

Bemidji State continued that intensity in the third period and outshot LU 9-3 in the final frame but were held off the scoreboard for most of the period until senior Kiki Radke scored a power-play goal with just 3:25 to play. The Beavers continued pressure in the offensive zone and earned a power play with 23 seconds remaining and pulled goaltender Lauren Bench in favor of the 6-on-4 advantage but three blocked shots by the Lions kept the Beavers from scoring the game-tying goal.

Blocked shots were a strong factor for the Lions' defense as they blocked 32 of the Beavers' 77 attempted shots in the game.

Wolf finished with 30 saves for the Lions while BSU redshirt junior Lauren Bench recorded 13 and drops her first contest of the 2019-20 season.

Junior Tina Kampa led the Beavers with two assists in the game while senior Heather Olson recorded the only other assist on Radke's power-play marker.

Bemidji State and Lindenwood close out the season-opening series tomorrow afternoon when the two teams face-off at 3:07 p.m., from the Sanford Center.
