BEMIDJI, Minn. - No. 4/3 University of Minnesota used a three-goal third period to defeat the Bemidji State University women's hockey team 4-1 Friday night in game one of their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series.

Junior Lydia Passolt scored the lone goal for the Beavers who fall to 14-14-3 and 8-11-2-0 in WCHA play. Redshirt Lauren Bench stopped 34-of-38 shots by the Gophers (22-5-3, 14-5-2-1 WCHA) but falls to 11-12-2 on the season.

Bemidji State now stands six points back of fourth-place University of Minnesota Duluth in the WCHA Standings with three games remaining while the Bulldogs have five games left to play.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first period but Minnesota struck first in the second period when Alex Woken scored her 13th goal of the season 4:10 into the middle frame.

Minnesota extended its lead to 2-0 in the third period when Woken scored her second of the game just 6:56 into the final period. Bemidji State responded however, and just 1:55 later, Passolt netted her third goal in three games for her 10th of the season off a tic-tac-toe play set up by seniors Abby Halluska and Kiki Radke.

The Gophers weren't fazed however, and continued dominating the offensive zone and broke through at 12:29 to retake the two-goal lead when Madeline Wethington scored her sixth goal of the season from the blueline. Minnesota extended its lead to 4-1 with 1:53 left to play off the stick of Emily Oded to seal the game one victory.

Bemidji State was outshot 38-16 in a game where no penalties were called.

Sydney Scobee earned the win in the crease for the Gophers after stopping 15-of-16 shots and improves to 21-5-3 on the season.

Bemidji State will attempt at a series split tomorrow afternoon when it honors its six seniors, Halluska, Radke, Jacqueline Kaasa, Haley Mack, Briana Jorde and Heather Olson in part of Senior Day. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:07 p.m., with a ceremony honoring the seniors following the game.
