BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State University women's hockey senior Haley Mack scored twice in the second period and redshirt junior Lauren Bench stopped 28 of 29 shots by No. 8 University of Minnesota Duluth to lead the Beavers to a 2-1 victory and series sweep. With the win, the Beavers (3-2-1, 2-0-0-0 WCHA) garnered three points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings.
After a scoreless first period, Mack scored two goals in the second period for her team-leading, fifth and sixth goals of the season while Minnesota Duluth's (3-2-1, 2-2-0-0 WCHA) Anneke Linser scored the lone goal for the Bulldogs. Heather Olson, Kiki Radke, Clair DeGeorge and Mak Langei all recorded assists for the Beavers.
Mack began the scoring with a power-play tally at 4:39 of the second period and shortly followed with her second goal of the game 5:10 later. For Mack, the pair of goals would be her third and fourth goals of the series and second consecutive game with two goals. She now has six goals in six games on the season which is second in the WCHA.
Minnesota Duluth battled back in the third period and out-shot the Bemidji State 12-4 in the final frame. The Beavers would be short-handed twice during the period including three minutes of five-minute major penalty but Bench and the Beavers' defense were excellent on the penalty kill and turned aside both power play chances.
Bemidji State's defense aided Bench by blocking a season-high 32 shots including nine from junior Mak Langei.
With the win, Bench improved to 2-1-0 on the season while the Beavers improve to 3-2-1 and 2-0-0-0 in conference play.
The Beavers will bring their three-game unbeaten streak into No. 1 University of Wisconsin where the Beavers will face the top-ranked Badgers for a two-game, league series Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27.
