BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University women's hockey team held a 3-2 lead early in the third period, but two-unanswered goals including the game-winning overtime goal handed No. 8 Ohio State University the victory and three points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings.
The No. 8 Buckeyes (6-3-2, 4-3-2-0 WCHA) downed the Beavers (3-5-1, 2-3-0-0 WCHA) 4-3 in the extra period and out-shot Bemidji State 38-16 including 20-3 in the final two period.
Senior Heather Olson scored her first collegiate goal 20 seconds into the final period while on a Beaver power play to give BSU a 3-2 lead while junior Clair DeGeorge posted a goal and an assist and senior Haley Mack scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Redshirt junior Lauren Bench stopped 34-of-38 shots in her fifth consecutive start but falls to 2-4-0 on the season.
Bemidji State twice came back from a one-goal deficit when Ohio State's Jenn Gardiner opened the scoring at 3:06 of the first period. Mack tied the game first with her team-leading seventh goal of the game 3:06 after OSU's opening goal. She is now tied for sixth in the conference with that mark.
Ohio State regained the lead in the second period when Gardiner scored her second of the game at 8:45 of the period but Bemidji State once again answered when DeGeorge netted her first goal of the season 3:19 later.
BSU then gained a power play late in the second period and carried it into the third when Olson one-timed a Tina Kampa pass and beat goaltender Andrea Braendli low glove for the go-ahead marker just 20 seconds into the final frame. However, the Buckeyes dominated play in the final period and with 6:45 remaining, OSU's Jincy Dunne scored the game-tying goal.
Both teams would head into overtime tied 3-3 and just 1:18 into the extra period, Liz Scehpers beat Bench for the game-winning goal.
Bemidji State finished the game 1-for-2 on the power play while it's penalty kill held the Buckeyes empty on both of their chances.
The Beavers will try for the series split tomorrow afternoon when the two teams face-off once again at 3:07 p.m.
